Literature review of medical school surveys regarding treatment in substance abuse. Planning a survey to measure core competencies in med school curriculum: Identifying core competencies (as AMERSA) that every medical school should teach.

Cornell University Medical School

Improvement of substance abuse curriculum: Met with lecturers and faculty members to discuss views on a formalized substance abuse curriculum throughout the first three years of medical school. Looked at clinical curricula developed by organizations such as the Hazelden Foundation that could be adopted at Cornell Medical School. Arranged with primary care clerkship director for more time to be devoted to substance abuse education. Substance abuse adjunct to the primary care clerkship at Cornell: 1. opportunity to follow patients in one of two methadone clinics; 2. spend time in a clinic which specializes in the outpatient care of patients with substance abuse (i.e., tobacco, alcohol, cocaine, etc.); 3. opportunity to participate in weekly rounds and conferences conducted by the substance abuse faculty.

Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine

Publication of an article in the NSU-COM school magazine detailing HPSSAT program as well as local project. Interview of possible faculty sponsors for the Student American Osteopathic Academy of Addiction Medicine (SAOAAM). Application for grant to fund substance abuse-themed lectures on campus. Collaboration with campus organization that deals with impaired students.

University of Arizona

Poster exhibit at AMERSA/IntNSA Conference stating HPSSAT goals & objectives. Two-hour class on Substance Abuse and Childbearing Women for maternal child undergrad nursing at Arizona Western College in Yuma. Collaborations with other colleges in Arizona to promote initiatives such as Alcohol Screening Day, substance abuse as a health care issue, and recognition of substance abuse problems in children and adolescents.

University of Southern California Medical School

Created a medical student group at USC's Keck School of Medicine called "Students for Training In Substance Use and Health Care (STUC)." STUC events: Lunchtime video screening of “Taking Drug Users Seriously.” USC Pharmacology lecture on MDMA. Lecture on the role of Drug & Alcohol Counseling in recovery. Medical Marijuana Seminar: Perspectives on Clinical Applications of Cannabis Sativa and Indica. Drug and Alcohol sessions at LA Juvenile Hall held in January and April discussing issues of safety and seeking help.
